China, Syria Forge Deeper Ties
The meeting focused on both bilateral relations and broader regional and international developments. Discussions emphasized expanding collaboration across multiple sectors, media reported.
During the talks, Shi Hongwei reiterated China’s unwavering support for Syria’s national integrity, stating his country’s “keenness on supporting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic and its rejection of any interference in its internal affairs.”
He also stressed the value of close diplomatic engagement, adding “the importance of continued coordination and consultation between the two sides for the benefit of the two friendly peoples.”
The diplomatic engagement comes as Damascus intensifies efforts to rebuild its war-ravaged economy by fostering international alliances and securing economic partnerships.
Throughout Syria’s prolonged conflict, China—alongside Russia—has consistently backed the regime of former leader Bashar al-Assad, frequently using its influence to thwart UN Security Council resolutions aimed at holding the government accountable. Assad fled to Russia in late 2024.
