Iran Demands Sanctions Lifted, Nuclear Rights Honored to Resume U.S. Talks

(MENAFN) Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi announced on Tuesday that Tehran is prepared to resume indirect negotiations with the United States, provided that sanctions are lifted and Iran’s entitlement to peaceful nuclear technology is upheld.

During a session with the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, Araghchi expressed readiness to engage in talks, as reported by media through commission member Yaghoub Rezazadeh.

The minister clarified, “in case the sanctions are lifted and Iran's right to use peaceful nuclear technology is respected, indirect negotiations with the United States will be held before raising the issue of (triggering) the snapback mechanism in October,” according to the lawmaker.

The snapback mechanism refers to a provision within the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) that permits signatories to reinstate international sanctions if Iran breaches the terms of the agreement.

Araghchi further noted that preparations are underway for discussions between Iran and Russia regarding Tehran’s nuclear program. He also indicated a scheduled meeting in Istanbul on Friday involving Iranian officials and representatives from France, Britain, and Germany to deliberate on the same topic, Rezazadeh said.

The JCPOA, signed in July 2015 by Iran and six world powers—Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia, and the United States—committed Iran to limit its nuclear activities in return for sanctions relief.

However, the U.S. withdrew unilaterally from the agreement in 2018, reinstating sanctions and prompting Iran to gradually scale back its compliance with nuclear restrictions.
